As families and friends are probably thinking of summer escapades, the Philippine National Police (PNP) advised them to take precautionary measures to avoid drowning incidents after an increase in fatalities during the April-May period last year.
Not only that, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf T. Tuaño, also said police forces across the country were also advised to implement road safety measures after an increase of road crash fatalities last year.
For the beach incidents, Tuaño said their Maritime Group and territorial police forces are in charge of coordinating with beach and resort owners to ensure that appropriate measures are in place especially during peak season.
“We are asking our kababayan to observe safety measures while enjoying the summer vacation,” said Tuaño.
Citing police data, he said there were 90 incidents of drowning during April-May period in 2025 and this went up to 151 during the same period last year.
Most of the incidents occurred in the coastal areas of Ilocos Region and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas Rizal, Quezon).
For road crash, he said the PNP recorded 31,000 incidents of road crashes in 2024 but it went down to around 30,000 last year.
For the April-May period in 2024 alone, there were 884 road crash fatalities recorded and the figure went up to 919 during the same two-month period last year.
Most of the fatalities were in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Ilocos Region and Northern Mindanao.
Tuaño also lamented that some cases of fatal road crashes involved drivers under the influence of liquor.
He said the PNP will be deploying a sufficient number of policemen on the ground to assist in strictly enforcing road safety rules and regulations, including inspections of public utility vehicles in transportation hubs.
“The coordination with local government units and other agencies is of big help in preventive measures,” said Tuaño.
But he also emphasized the necessity of cooperation among private motorists to ensure the road worthiness of their own motor vehicles and in ensuring that they will not compromise the safety of their family by observing road safety measures.
