Green GSM eyes rapid EV push in Philippines amid fuel spike

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) ride-hailing firm Green and Smart Mobility (GSM), operating as Green GSM in the Philippines, is planning a major expansion in the country to take advantage of rising demand for transport services as fuel prices soar, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said.

“They see an expansion opportunity here in the Philippines, especially in this kind of situation,” said Trade Secretary Cristina Roque in a radio interview on Thursday, March 26.

Roque met with officials of Green GSM on Wednesday, March 25, as the company relayed its plans to widen its services following its successful launch in the country last year.

While the company has been steadily expanding its operations, she said this is expected to be fast-tracked as more Filipinos shift to public transportation instead of using their own vehicles.

The shift comes as fuel prices have continued to increase in recent weeks due to supply constraints caused by tensions in the Middle East.

This prompted President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to declare a state of national energy emergency through Executive Order (EO) No. 110 last Tuesday, March 24.

“We can really see the need for e-vehicles in situations like these,” said Roque.

Under EO 110, the DTI is tasked with promoting the adoption and use of EVs, among other energy alternatives, to reduce the country’s dependence on petroleum products.

The Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) Committee, established under the same EO, is directed to accelerate the transition to renewable energy (RE) through the use of EVs in the mass transport system, among other measures.

Roque said Green GSM’s potential expansion in the country will not only support this push but also further enhance the Philippines’ investment appeal.

Green GSM, the country’s first fully foreign-owned EV operator, offers all-electric mobility services using vehicles manufactured by Vietnamese automotive firm VinFast.

Green GSM earlier partnered with electric mobility company Green Xentro to launch the initial phase of a 2,500-unit fleet of EV taxis in Rizal province.

The company said this marks the first large-scale implementation of its partner-led expansion model, designed to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility across emerging markets.

With the expected increase in EV adoption amid higher fuel prices, Roque said the DTI will monitor potential price hikes that take advantage of consumers.

“We will keep on checking because demand for EVs is there,” she said.

Earlier, leading automotive firm Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) said it anticipates EV models to increase their share in total vehicle sales from 8.5 percent to 20 percent this year.
