Nine-time league Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo showed the way for the Beermen with 27 points and 17 rebounds although he had plenty of help particularly in the waning seconds to keep the hard-fighting FiberXers at bay.
Marcio Lassiter finished with 11 points – including a booming triple late while Don Trollano, who finished with 18, nailed two crucial free throws with 27 seconds left to give the Beermen a precarious 101-99 cushion.
Converge still had the chance to tie or take the lead in its last possession but Alec Stockton, who nailed a four that tied the game at 99-all the play prior, missed the supposed go-ahead three.
San Miguel got the rebound and ran the clock down before Fajardo scored on a short stab to seal the deal for the Beermen, who improved to a 1-1 record. Converge, on the other hand, absorbed its third straight defeat in four games.
Fajardo added three assists and two steals to his name while CJ Perez did a little bit of everything with 24 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. SMB import Marcus Lee finished with a double-double of 10 points,12 rebounds to go with six assists and three blocks.
Justine Baltazar paced Converge with 19 points while Stockton continued to step up in Juan Gomez de Liano’s absence with 17 points and eight assists. Mikey Williams also had his best game since his PBA return after finishing with 14 points and eight assists.
Import Kylor Kelly added 12 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a losing effort.
