CEBU CITY – The province of Bohol has stable supply of rice amid the conflict in the Middle East, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) said in a meeting with businessmen and key stakeholders on Wednesday, March 25.
The province, led by Gov. Aris Aumentado, is taking steps to cushion the impact of the global crisis, including assessing the current rice situation and strengthening coordination between the government and the private sector.
The OPA said that Bohol has sufficient rice stocks to meet the needs of the people.
Officials presented updates on rice prices, noting the changes before and during the global crisis to help stakeholders better understand market trends.
Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog emphasized the importance of closely monitoring rice stocks to prevent hoarding and ensure the smooth movement of supply in the province.
Quirog stressed that proper regulation of importation and distribution is necessary to keep prices fair and stable for consumers.
Representatives from the private sector shared their concerns and recommendations.
Cesar Dahan of Alturas Corp. discussed the need for clearer guidelines on rice pricing in municipalities and called for fair pricing of palay that would protect both farmers and traders.
National Food Authority (NFA)-Bohol Branch Manager Pilita Barajan provided updates on the implementation of the government’s P20 rice program in the province.
In the meeting, Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte underscored the importance of strong regulatory measures, saying that effective regulation remains key to maintaining balance in the rice market and protecting consumers from sudden price spikes.
Also present during the meeting were Chief of Staff Atty. Filipina Asoy-Piollo and Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry Pamugas, as well as representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Philippine Coast Guard, representatives of the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Agriculture, and major rice traders and retailers, including Alturas Corp., Bohol Quality Mall, AH Shoppers Mart, ZJF Corp., and Bayanihan Cooperative.
