CEBU CITY – Local government units in Cebu and various government agencies have teamed up to ensure smooth and safe travel during the Holy Week.
Led by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-Central Visayas (LTFRB-7) and Land Transportation Office-Central Visayas (LTO-7), “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semanta Santa 2026” was launched on Wednesday, March 25, here.
Police Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, chief of the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7), Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, and representatives of Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas attended the launching.
Lawyer Wendel Dinglasan, chief of LTO-7, said one of the agency’s main tasks to ensure the safety of passengers is to prevent overloading.
To prevent drivers from carrying passengers beyond the vehicles’ capacity, the LTO-7 will deploy mystery riders.
“These mystery riders will be the ones to report to us if there’s an overloading. It’s better to have mystery drivers because drivers will not be able to engage with them,” Dinglasan said.
LTFRB-7 Regional Director Abosamen Matuan said 50 special permits have been granted to transport operators to ensure that passengers traveling to their provinces for the long holiday will not have difficulty commuting.
Inspections will also be conducted to check the readiness of terminal facilities as well as the road worthiness of public utility vehicles, said Matuan.
PRO-7 assured that enough support will be given to the LTO-7 and LTFRB-7.
Maranan said they will be on heightened alert during the Holy Week with at least 10,000 police personnel ready to be deployed. Police will strictly monitor piers, terminals, tourist spots and religious places.
"There will be maximum police visibility in places of convergence. We will have motorists’ assistance desks and we will be deploying personnel in highways and even in secondary roads,” said Maranan.
Maranan said that so far, they have yet to monitor possible threats that may disrupt the observance of the Holy Week.
Maranan appealed for public cooperation. “Strict security measures that will be enforced are meant to ensure safety rather than to cause hassle for travelers.”
