The "Sunog Apog" pumping station in Manila, which has been inactive for six years, is scheduled to reopen in May, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the reopening forms part of the government’s intensified flood control drive under its “Oplan Kontra Baha” program.
He made the announcement following a Metro Manila Council meeting at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) headquarters in Pasig City, where he presented key flood mitigation measures to Metro Manila mayors and other stakeholders.
Dizon stressed the urgency of completing flood control projects as the rainy season approaches, citing the need to accelerate ongoing works despite funding constraints.
"Papalapit na ang tag-ulan, so kailangan talaga paspasayan natin yung ating mga kailangang gawin. Ang ginagawa natin ngayon -- given yung limitasyon natin sa pondo sa flood control -- lahat ng kaya nating gawin para maibsan yung epekto ng ulan eh ginagawa natin. Kailangan tayong mag-dredge, kailangan yung mga pumping stations natin mapagana natin (The rainy season is approaching, so we really need to speed up the projects we need to accomplish. Given our limited flood control funds, we are doing everything we can to lessen the impact of the rains. We need to dredge, and our pumping stations must be operational)," Dizon said.
"Kampante tayo na by May, gagana na ang Sunog Apog, finally, malaking bagay ‘yan (We are confident that by May, the facility will be operational; finally, that is a big achievement)," he added.
The DPWH chief also urged Metro Manila mayors to submit their priority flood management plans.
He specifically highlighted plans involving aging drainage systems that require upgrading.
He further emphasized the need to identify areas that require additional pumping stations, citing ongoing efforts in Marikina and Manila as examples.
Meanwhile, Dizon said repairs on the damaged navigational gate in Navotas City are nearly complete and are expected to be operational again by April.
He also requested the MMDA to allow 24/7 rehabilitation works along EDSA during the Holy Week period to accelerate infrastructure improvements while traffic volume is expected to be lighter.
