Pasig LGU inaugurates P20-M electric minibuses to boost Libreng Sakay program
The local government of Pasig on Monday, March 23, inaugurated five new electric minibuses worth P19,948,000 to boost the city’s Libreng Sakay Program, especially amid the continuous rise in oil prices.
During the inauguration, Mayor Vico Sotto said the new public electric vehicles are timely and will truly benefit Pasigueños amid possible fare increases due to the ongoing oil crisis.
Sotto said each unit costs P3,989,600 and has a seating capacity of 22, with room for an additional eight standing passengers per trip.
The City Transportation Development and Management Office (CTDMO) will manage the new vehicles, which will be deployed as part of the Libreng Sakay Program, which currently operates on a single route from Caruncho Avenue to the Temporary Pasig City Hall and back.
“We will pilot test underserved and potential PUV routes to improve the efficiency of public transport in the city," Sotto said.
“The goal is to see if these routes are feasible and have adequate demand. This is also in line with the finalization of the city's Local Public Transport Route Plan and Traffic Management Plan, in coordination with appropriate national government agencies,” he added.
Currently, the local government uses one bus for the program, and once the five new vehicles are deployed, a total of six will serve the program, which operates Monday to Friday.
“So with the addition of 5 electric buses, mas madadagdagan na ulit ang routes namin. (And) hindi for special circumstances lang ang Libreng Sakay. It's a regular program of the LGU (With the addition of five electric buses, the city plans to expand the routes, and the Libreng Sakay Program is not just for special circumstances—it is a regular program of the LGU),” it noted.
Vice Mayor Dodot Jaworski also said the initiative aims to provide more affordable and reliable transportation for everyone.
“Maliit na hakbang pa lamang ito, at alam naming marami pa tayong dapat gawin. Asahan po ninyo, hindi tayo hihinto sa pag-iisip ng mga paraan para mas mapadali ang buhay dito sa ating lungsod (This is just a small step, and we know there is still much more to be done. Rest assured, we will not stop finding ways to make life easier here in our city),” he said.
The additional minibuses will be put into service soon, with the CTDMO finalizing the routes for pilot testing and other preparations.
