LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – Mayor Hisham Ismail here has announced that scheduled local government activities will continue as planned, despite the cancellation of similar events in other municipalities in Albay due to rising petroleum prices caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis.
Ismail emphasized that Legazpi City has allocated funds for these programs, which will not be affected by the current economic pressures.
He cited the upcoming Mayor’s Cup Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament set to begin this April.
“Let us prioritize our youth. For now, these activities are not affected,” Ismail said.
Neighboring towns, such as Guinobatan and Polangui, have canceled similar events as an austerity measure in response to the nationwide economic impact of the fuel crisis.
Despite these challenges, Ismail confirmed that this year’s Ibalong Festival will proceed as scheduled, even though the provincial government of Albay has canceled the Magayon Festival, which was planned for May.
The Pinangat Festival in the town of Camalig, also slated for May, has been canceled.
“The Ibalong Festival is still a long way off, so for now it will proceed as planned,” Ismail said.
Ibalong Festival is scheduled every August.
Ismail announced that at least 2,500 tricycle drivers will receive P1,000 subsidy each from the Legazpi City government to help mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on their livelihood.
