'Justice has been served': Gunman in Capistrano robbery-slay finally arrested
Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso announced on Tuesday, March 24, the arrest of 27-year-old Albert Magdaraog, the gunman who robbed and killed former Manila Police District (MPD) policeman George Capistrano, who also served as part of Domagoso's security detail.
Domagoso presented Magdaraog to the public during his "Talk to the People" program on Facebook, wherein he said the suspect was arrested inside a lodging house in San Pedro, Laguna, earlier today.
The suspect was previously identified by Liegem Bulalacao Young, who served as Magdaraog's driver during the robbery-shooting incident in Balut, Tondo, last March 15. He was also positively identified as the gunman through recovered CCTV footage from the crime scene.
Young voluntarily surrendered to the police on March 17 after the mayor issued a 48-hour ultimatum and a P500,000 reward for their arrest.
Domagoso explained Magdaraog's arrest was the result of sustained coordination among units of the MPD, backed by intelligence validation and information from civilians who reported sightings of the suspect as he moved from Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, and eventually Laguna.
“Paikot-ikot sa Nueva Ecija, sa Cabanatuan, sa Arayat, pati sa San Mateo—kung saan-saan po ’to nagpunta (He was seen around Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija, Arayat in Pampanga, and even San Mateo in Rizal)," he said.
Authorities noted Magdaraog was arrested by virtue of a standing warrant for robbery issued by a Baguio court, with additional charges, including violation of Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, set to be filed.
A 23-year-old woman identified as Maria Cristina Anduyan was also nabbed by the police and is currently facing charges for obstruction of justice for harboring the suspect while he was on the run.
A .40 caliber pistol was also recovered from Magdaraog's possession following his arrest, believed to be the same gun he used in shooting Capistrano.
Domagoso earlier said Magdaraog and Young belong to a notorious riding-in-tandem robbery-holdup group operating in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon, wherein most of their robberies end up with them killing their victims.
He expressed his gratitude to the public, attributing the gunman's arrest to their help in tracking down the suspect, stressing that cooperation between citizens and law enforcement played a decisive role in resolving the case.
“Ang nagbibigay ng impormasyon sa ating kapulisan ay mga taong bayan. Alam niyo po kung sino kayo, at maraming salamat po sa inyo (Those who provide information to our police force are the people of the country. You know who you are, and I thank you very much)," the mayor said.
"To the family of George Capistrano, I hope your city government has given you justice today,” he added.
