Filipinas expect tough grind in World Cup

Filipinas forward Alesandrea Carpio said there’s only one way for the team to prepare for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“Play together,” said the 24-year-old Carpio in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Philippine Sports Commission media room.
“That’s why we are just waiting for the opportunity to come together,” she added barely a week after the Filipinas qualified to a second straight World Cup.
It will be the first World Cup for Carpio, who joined the Filipinas in 2024. The global event that gathers the sport’s Top 32 nations will take place in football-crazy Brazil in June next year.
The celebrated team is coming off a stint at the Women’s Asian Cup in Australia, where it battled the host team, South Korea, Iran, Japan and Uzbekistan.
The Filipinas lost to Australia, South Korea and Japan, but pulled off a life-saving win over Iran that set the stage to the big match against Uzbekistan, pulling off a 2-nil decision that sealed a return ticket to football’s biggest stage.
“It’s such a surreal feeling for the Philippines to qualify to another World Cup. I’m very, very proud of all the work the team put in,” added Carpio during the forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO and ArenaPlus, the country’s 24/7 app.
Carpio was joined at the forum by Philippine Football Federation media officer Ingrid Mendoza, who said the team is looking forward to a series of friendlies, including one or some at home, heading to the Nagoya Asian Games in October.
In 2023, the Filipinas broke barriers and made it to the World Cup for the first time and scored its first goal in a stunning 1-0 win over host country New Zealand.
Now, the Filipinas get another chance to showcase their skills before the world.
Carpio said before the team members parted ways after qualifying to next year’s World Cup, Australian head coach Mark Torcaso delivered a strong message
“Coach said ‘work doesn’t stop,’” said Carpio, adding that they were reminded to focus on resting then staying in shape, even individually.
“Until the time comes when we can come together whenever that is,” said Carpio.
