A fisherman from Zambales was found alive after drifting at sea for five days as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) carried out search and rescue operations off Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough or Panatag Shoal), it was reported on Sunday, March 22.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemi Cayabyab identified the fisherman as a 32-year-old resident of Barangay Wawanway, Subic, Zambales. He was reported missing on March 15 after his service boat “Bebelot,” operating under fishing boat “Gabriel Geruz 6,” failed to return.
He was rescued during the conduct of maritime patrol and search and rescue operations by the PCG in the vicinity waters off Bajo de Masinloc, Zambales last March 20.
The PCG said information on the fisherman’s last known position was received in coordination with BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408), leading to his rescue.
“Upon arrival at the reported location, PCG conducted search operations and eventually spotted the missing boat approximately 78.98 nautical miles west off Capon Grande, Zambales,” Cayabyab shared.
Capon Grande is approximately 134 nautical miles from Bajo de Masinloc, which lies west of Zambales and is a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen.
Upon rescue, the fisherman was immediately provided medical assistance onboard BRP Cabra, the PCG said.
“The service boat was also secured and brought onboard the vessel,” Cayabyab noted.
BRP Cabra has since departed the area and was en route to Subic, Zambales for the proper turnover of the rescued fisherman.
