EJ Obiena came up short in his campaign at the World Indoor Athletics Championships after finishing tied for ninth place in Poland on Sunday, March 22 (Philippine time).
The two-time Olympian pole vaulter cleared the bar at 5.70 meters in tie with 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Chris Nilsen and settled behind podium finishers Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, Emmanouil Karalis of Greece and Kurtis Marschall of Australia.
Duplantis, the reigning Olympic champion and current world record-holder, posted a new championship record of 6.25 meters to capture the gold medal, while Karalis, a 2024 Paris Olympics bronze winner, came in silver with 6.05m.
Marschall bagged the bronze with a personal-best 6.00m.
Obiena started strong by clearing 5.50m and 5.70m on his first attempts, but failed to succeed at 5.85m.
Meanwhile, Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen finished fourth with 5.95m followed by United States’ Zachery Bradford (5.95m), France’s Baptiste Thiery (5.85m), Netherlands’ Menno Vloon (5.85m), and France’s Thibaut Collet (5.85m).
Norway’s Simen Guttormsen finished 11th with 5.70m while Czechia’s David Holy came in last with 5.50m.
