A woman allegedly involved in an online extortion and robbery scheme was arrested after reportedly demanding P2 million and threatening a foreign national in Manila on Friday, March 20.
The suspect was arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Cyber Response Unit along Apacible and Perez Streets in Manila. The victim filed a complaint after allegedly receiving threats from the suspect through a messaging app.
Authorities said that the suspect allegedly demanded P2 million and warned of harm if the amount was not given.
Recovered from her were marked money, boodle money, a mobile phone, and identification cards.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez commended the operating units for their swift action.
“Hindi natin papayagan na gamitin ang teknolohiya para manakot at mang-extort (We will not tolerate the use of technology for intimidation and extortion). The PNP is ready and capable of going after those who exploit digital platforms to commit crimes,” he said.
He also reminded the public to remain vigilant when dealing with unknown contacts online, saying, “Huwag agad matakot o magpadala sa pananakot (Do not be easily intimidated or give in to threats). Report immediately to authorities. Mas mabilis nating naaaksyunan ang ganitong kaso kung agad itong naipapaabot sa amin (We can act on these cases more quickly if they are reported to us right away).”
Authorities also warned individuals involved in online threats and extortion that they are continuously monitoring and taking action against such activities.
The public is urged to report suspicious messages, avoid engaging with unknown or threatening contacts, and call Unified 911 immediately for assistance.
