Shared values of unity, compassion, and service should continue to bind the nation even amid rising global tensions.
This was underscored by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) and the Department of National Defense (DND) as Muslim Filipinos marked Eid’l Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan, on Saturday, March 21.
“During this blessed occasion, we are reminded of the values of patience, humility, compassion, generosity toward others, and devotion to the Almighty,” OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said.
“Filipinos may come from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs, but we are all bound by the common ideals of peace, kindness, and solidarity,” he added.
The OPAPRU has played a key role in advancing peace initiatives including the implementation of agreements with Moro groups in Mindanao to address decades-long conflict and promote inclusive development in the Bangsamoro region.
“In a time where conflict and violence have erupted in different parts of our world, Ramadan has truly become a celebration of our shared humanity and a reminder that kindness is the strongest force of all,” Galvez said.
He also pointed to the deeper meaning of fasting and charity during Ramadan.
“Through fasting, members of the Muslim faithful better understand the struggles of those who are facing hunger, discrimination, and conflict. Moreover, acts of charity and service during the holy month strengthen the communal spirit of helping the less fortunate and serving the common good,” he said.
“As you celebrate Eid’l Fitr, may the spirit of Ramadan inspire peace, understanding, and unity in the hearts of all the faithful,” he added.
Meanwhile, DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. echoed the call for unity and service as he highlighted the role of Muslim Filipinos in national security and public service.
“The Department of National Defense extends its warmest greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters celebrating Eid'l Fitr,” Teodoro said.
Muslim military personnel have long served in both combat and non-combat roles, particularly in Mindanao, where security operations and peacebuilding efforts often intersect.
“We acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our Muslim personnel to the DND, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines and our civilian bureaus,” Teodoro said.
“We also keep in our thoughts and prayers our men and women in uniform who are observing this blessed occasion in the line of duty,” he added.
The OPAPRU and DND’s calls for peace were issued as the conflict in Iran and across the Middle East continues to escalate amid sustained airstrikes, retaliatory missile attacks, and disruptions to global energy supplies.
