The Philippines has always been a nation of dreamers — of people who carry their roots with pride no matter how far they travel. And on the night of March 16, at the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, one of our own made the entire nation burst with joy.
Filipino-American cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman of color — and the first woman ever — to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography, taking home the golden statuette for the critically acclaimed film "Sinners." For every Filipino watching from living rooms in Manila, from homes in New York, Singapore, and London, the moment was electric.
To understand the magnitude of this triumph, consider this: in the entire history of the Academy Awards, no woman had ever won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Only three women had ever been nominated — Rachel Morrison in 2018 for "Mudbound," Ari Wegner in 2021 for "The Power of the Dog," and Mandy Walker in 2022 for "Elvis." Autumn did not just break that ceiling. She shattered it, and she did it, carrying the Filipino spirit on her lens.
She earned her place at the top, besting a field that included Adolpho Veloso “Train Dreams,” Michael Bauman “One Battle After Another,” Dan Laustsen “Frankenstein,” and Darius Khondji “Marty Supreme.” This was no small feat — these are among the finest cinematographers working today. And Autumn rose above them all.
"I'm so honored to be here, and I really want all the women in the room to stand up. Because I feel like I don't get here without you guys. I really, really truly mean that. I have felt so much love from all the women on this whole campaign and have gotten to meet so many people, and I just feel like moments like this happen because of you guys, and I want to thank you for that," said Autumn in her Oscars acceptance speech.
And yet, through all the celebration, Autumn remained beautifully grounded. After her historic nomination, she admitted she wasn’t sure if the moment had fully sunk in yet.
“You’re rooting on the sidelines for your family that you made the film with that meant so much to you, and you can only hope that people are recognized, but it’s not your main goal.”
"To have other people, like young girls and boys, see you out there, speaking about what you do and showing them that it matters, that’s been really fun," she said.
That is the gift Autumn has given us. Not just a trophy on a shelf, but a vision — a living, breathing proof that a girl with Filipino blood can stand on the world’s biggest stage and be celebrated for her art.
Autumn added, “I thought how special it would be for someone in the future to look up this nomination, because I’m the fourth woman. And I know the ones that came before me.”
She was also generous in her praise of director Ryan Coogler, whose belief in women behind the camera helped make this historic night possible. In "Sinners," Hannah Beachler served as production designer, and Ruth E. Carter designed the costumes — a powerhouse creative team that Autumn was proud to be part of.
“I’m honored that it’s happening with Ryan and for this particular film, and what this story is, because it’s not just for me, it’s not just getting a nomination, it’s what was it for, and who was it with, and so that’s so special to me, It’s very suited that it is Ryan, because that’s how he is. He believes in you so much and on the highest level, with or without accolades," Autumn said.
"Sinners," which grossed $368 million worldwide, now holds the record for the most Oscar wins this season with 16 nominations — a film that will forever be linked to a Filipina woman’s name in the annals of Hollywood history.
Born in Oxnard, California, to a Filipino mother and an African-American Creole father, Autumn grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is, in every sense, a product of two proud cultures — and both cultures celebrate her.
Her journey was not an overnight success — it was built on years of dedication and craft. Autumn attended Loyola Marymount University, where she studied art history, before earning her degree from the prestigious AFI Conservatory's cinematography program in 2009. She paid her dues, working in advertising and as a camera assistant before steadily climbing to the top of her field. In 2022, she became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers — and now, in 2026, she stands as its most celebrated alumna.
Autumn, 46, debuted as a cinematographer in the TV series "On the Road in America" in 2007. Her remarkable body of work includes "The Last Showgirl," "The Kick of Destiny," "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," "Nike: Play New," and Rihanna's iconic music video "Lift Me Up" — a title that, tonight, feels like a prophecy.
Autumn has lifted us all. She has lifted every Filipino child who has ever looked up at a movie screen and wondered if someone like them could one day be the one behind the camera. The answer, now and forever, is yes.
Mabuhay, Autumn. The Philippines is proud of you.
