The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured the public of heightened security measures across the country as Muslim Filipinos prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, March 21.
Police units will be deployed in key areas to safeguard mosques, prayer venues, and Muslim communities, according to PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr.
“Our security plan is in place to give our Muslim brothers the peace of mind on this important and sacred occasion. Our personnel on the ground are always ready to assist,” Nartatez said in a statement Friday, March 20.
The Islamic calendar marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and reflection observed by millions of Filipino Muslims. Reports said that Eid al-Fitr will fall on March 21 after the moon was not sighted on March 20.
Moon sighting determines the start of Eid al-Fitr by marking the end of Ramadan. Muslims look for the new crescent moon after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan. If seen, Eid is the next day but if not, Ramadan continues for 30 days before Eid is declared.
The PNP said that the occasion is usually highlighted by large congregational prayers in mosques and open spaces, drawing large crowds in urban centers and Muslim communities.
Last week, the PNP began the deployment of around 55,000 personnel to secure the upcoming activities, including the Holy Week, summer vacation, and Eid al-Fitr.
“Our priority is the safety of all Filipino citizens. We will deploy police units in key areas, coordinate with local leaders, and ensure peace during Eid prayers,” Nartatez said.
“We have traffic and crowd management plans in place, especially near major mosques. Hinihikayat namin ang everyone na sumunod sa traffic rules para maiwasan ang abala. Quick response teams and medical units will be on standby. Agad kaming tutugon sa anumang insidente para sa kaligtasan ng publiko,” he added.
The PNP said it is working closely with local government units and Muslim leaders to ensure an orderly and peaceful observance of the holiday across the country.
“Nakikiisa ang buong PNP sa inyong pasasalamat at pagtatapos ng Ramadan. Patuloy po tayong magtulungan para sa kapayapaan. We wish you a solemn and joyous celebration. Eid Mubarak!” the PNP chief said.
