20 students from Toledo City awarded scholarships

CEBU CITY – Pursuing higher education has become easier for this group of students in Toledo City, Cebu.
Twenty students from Barangays Bato and Cabitoonan in Toledo received college scholarships through AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI).
Funded by Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI) and administered in partnership with Cebu Technological University (CTU), the scholarships cover additional financial support for educational expenses, allowing students to fully focus on their studies.
This program ensures accessibility for students from fenceline communities near the TVI facility.
They were selected in coordination with barangay officials, reflecting TVI’s commitment to supporting its host communities and nurturing local talent.
“We express our deepest gratitude to Therma Visayas Inc. and the esteemed leadership of Cebu Technological University for their unwavering belief in our aspirations. Your valuable support has not only unlocked new opportunities but has also alleviated our burdens, making our dreams a reality,” shared Reah Sofia Mata, one of the scholars.
During the turnover ceremony at the main campus on March 3, officials from TVI and CTU highlighted how partnerships and the long-term value of investing in education between industry, academia, and local government can create sustainable opportunities for youth.
“Education remains one of the most powerful catalysts for sustainable community development. By investing in our scholars today, we are helping nurture future professionals who can contribute to Toledo City and beyond,” said Leonardo Robel Jr., Vice President for Corporate Services of AboitizPower Transition Business Group-Visayas.
TVI, a subsidiary of AboitizPower operating a 300MW coal-fired power plant in Toledo, integrates similar programs into its broader social responsibility initiatives, supporting education and strengthening the local talent pipeline to meet Toledo’s growing workforce needs.
