The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Thursday, March 19, the official retirement of seven domestic tropical cyclone names from its 2025 roster.
The decommissioned names—Crising, Emong, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Tino, and Uwan—were removed due to the “exceptional magnitude and extent of the devastation” they caused, PAGASA said.
A tropical cyclone name is retired if it causes at least 300 deaths or inflicts damage worth ₱1 billion or more, according to official reports from the Office of Civil Defense.
The seven cyclones in 2025 collectively left 373 people dead, 680 injured, and 132 missing, with total damages exceeding ₱36 billion.
The retired names will be replaced starting in 2029 with Chico, Elias, Magyawan, Nilad, Omar, Tala, and Upang.
