'Libreng Sakay' in Manila for commuters amid transport strike

The Manila City Government deployed free rides on Thursday, March 19, to help commuters affected by the ongoing transport strike.

The deployment comes as the first day of the nationwide transport strike unfolds.

Drivers and operators from PASODA and PISTON staged a protest at Litex Market in Quezon City, calling for lower fuel prices, price controls on petroleum products, and other basic goods.

Groups including KADAMAY, Gabriela Women’s Party, Bayan Muna, commuters, and tricycle drivers also joined the demonstration.

Authorities said the strike is expected to continue, with protests scheduled at Mendiola on March 20.

Under the directive of Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (MCDRRMD), together with partner agencies, mobilized vehicles, including two trucks and two pick-up units from the city government, and one DFP truck with 14 mobile units from the Manila Police District (MPD).

The free rides covered routes from Vito Cruz to Welcome Rotonda, Vito Cruz to Monumento, with Kartilya ng Katipunan serving as the main jump-off point.

Deployment started at 5 a.m. and will continue until 7 p.m., or until the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) reports no stranded commuters.

The city emphasized that it remains on standby to ensure the safe and orderly transport of all passengers.
