Davao City food culture featured in Market Experience Tourism Circuit

DAVAO CITY – The city government kicked off their Davao Market Experience Familiarization Tour on Wednesday, March 18, offering tourists a first-hand look into the city’s food culture at Bankerohan Public Market.
The tour, designed to engage all five senses, allowed participants to see vibrant produce, smell rich aromas, hear the market’s daily rhythm, touch local products, and taste fresh flavors straight from the source.
Organized by the Davao City Tourism Operations Office, the new circuit tour highlights the market and the city’s large agricultural area of 244,000 hectares, of which 98,000 hectares are used for farming.
“This is an important step in transforming a developed tour into a shared experience, connecting people to the food that sustains Davao City every day,” said Olan Emboscado, tour guide and researcher for the CTOO.
Emboscado said the tour aims to deepen appreciation for Davao’s food culture while promoting community-based tourism that highlights the city’s identity and local traditions.
Participants visited local stalls and establishments, including the iconic 54-year-old Delmar Painitan, known for traditional delicacies such as Puto Maya, Biko, Sapin-Sapin, Sikwate, and Kinutil.
They also visited and sampled products from the Gulf Coast Coffee and Co., which offers a variety of coffee beans, and Cacao de Davao, known for its high-quality cacao beans.
All these tastings offered participants a glimpse into the flavors and cultural stories that define Davao’s culinary landscape. They also stopped by at flower shops as Davao is known for abundant flowers.
Grace Plata, tourism relations specialist of the CTOO and focal person for the Tourism Circuit Development Project, said the market tour brings stakeholders closer to local vendors, products, and daily market life.
Pia Lourdes Partoza, former president of the Davao Travel Agencies Association, said this new tourism circuit offers tourism stakeholders opportunities to diversify their offerings.
“It is important to create new products that cater to specific markets, such as culinary enthusiasts who want to experience local dishes. This helps showcase Davao as a unique culinary melting pot,” Partoza said.
The new circuit familiarization tour is part of a broader initiative by the city government, through CTOO, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, to develop and validate new tourism circuits.
Aside from Davao Market Experience, other recently launched circuits include the Davao Food Crawl, Davao Abundant Harvest (agro-tourism), and Furusato Davao, which explores the city’s pre-war Japanese heritage.
CTOO officer-in-charge Willenito Tormis Jr. said their mission is to connect Davao City not just for Davaoeños but also to everyone who wants to visit here, focusing on community-based tourism and new experiences.
