Celebrating Women's Month: Building self-esteem in young girls and women

Published Mar 19, 2026 09:40 am
In a world where gender roles and traditions can limit opportunities, nurturing confidence and self-worth in young girls is more important than ever. Empowered girls grow into women who face challenges with resilience, stand up for their rights, and inspire others along the way. World Vision Philippines partners with local leaders, sponsors, volunteers, parents, and communities to create safe and supportive environments where young girls can thrive. Through child-focused initiatives, their talents are recognized, their voices amplified, and their confidence strengthened.
A shining example is the #GirlsCan campaign, part of the global 1000 Girls Initiative by World Vision International. This campaign mobilizes communities to support young women, unlocking the limitless potential within every girl when she is given the right opportunities and encouragement.
How can you empower young women?
1. Become a role model - Be the mentor you wished you had. Young women need examples of confidence and resilience to envision their own possibilities. Your actions and encouragement can shape their dreams and aspirations.
2. Promote positive self-talk - Encourage young women to replace self-criticism with positive affirmations. A gentle inner dialogue helps build self-esteem, resilience, and a healthy sense of self.
3. Support their passions - Whether it’s sports, arts, academics, or hobbies, supporting girls’ interests gives them purpose, joy, and confidence. Passionate engagement also helps them navigate stress and challenges with focus.
4. Encourage assertiveness - Teach girls to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs respectfully and confidently. Knowing how to advocate for themselves fosters independence, agency, and self-assurance.
5. Foster independence - Allow young women to make choices and learn from them. Mistakes are opportunities to grow. Practicing independence builds decision-making skills and confidence over time.
6. Nurture their faith - Guide girls in developing a spiritual connection through prayer, reflection, or meditation. Faith can provide guidance, inner peace, and a sense of purpose that strengthens self-esteem from within.
High self-esteem builds strong futures
When young women believe in themselves, they face challenges with courage, make empowered choices, and pursue opportunities boldly. By fostering self-esteem, we equip them to become strong, independent leaders of tomorrow.
You can make a difference too. By becoming a volunteer or child sponsor, you provide not just education, food security, and daily support, but also guidance, motivation, and inspiration. With just P30 a day or P900 a month, you can help a young girl grow into the confident woman she is meant to be.
“If we want a better future for our children, we must invest in them today, providing for their needs, nurturing their gifts, and empowering them,” says Dr. Herbert Q. Carpio, World Vision Philippines’ national director. “We know the unique challenges young girls and women face, so let us support them and provide a guiding hand, inspiring and motivating them to fulfil their potential.”
