Far Eastern University thumped University of the East, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-11, to stay unscathed in eight games in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, March 18.
The Tamaraws, led by Dryx Saavedra and Amet Bituin, bounced back from an opening-set hiccup and slowly dominated the next three frames to pull away from the rest of the field.
Saavedra and Bituin paced with 15 points apiece, while Lirick Mendoza and Charles Absin added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Mikko Espartero, for his part, delivered timely kills and chipped in 10 points.
“Hindi naman sa nagulat, pero expected na rin kasi talaga naming lalaban ang UE. Pagtungtong lang nilang lahat sa court, hard game,” said FEU coach Eddieson Orcullo.
UE fell to 1-7 despite Raquim Aceron and RG Piojo scoring 21 and 15 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, defending champion National University vented its ire on the University of the Philippines, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19, to return to the win column.
Still reeling from a shock five-set loss to the De La Salle Green Spikers over the weekend, the Bulldogs quickly regained their bearings to open the second round on a high note.
NU improved to 6-2 for solo second, pulling away from University of Santo Tomas (5-2), while UP fell to 2-6.
Leo Ordiales paced the Bulldogs with 14 points and three digs, whiled Buds Buddin chipped in 14 points built on 10 attacks, three aces and one block on top of seven receptions and four digs.
Jade Disquitado also stepped up for the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Obed Mukaba and Peng Taguibolos had nine and six points, respectively.
Greg Ancheta also anchored the squad with his playmaking skills, delivering 25 excellent sets.
