The local government on Wednesday, March 18, stepped up its flood preparedness measures, with officials conducting an inspection of Matalahib Creek in anticipation of the upcoming rainy season.
Mayor Joy Belmonte led the inspection alongside Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon and UP Resilience Institute Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay.
During the inspection, officials discussed proposed plans to address flooding in vulnerable areas of the city.
The DPWH and the Quezon City government are set to present several options to the UP Resilience Institute for simulation and assessment to determine the most effective solutions.
Among the measures being considered are the deployment of mobile water pumps and the opening of flood control barriers, along with other engineering and operational strategies.
The city government said the science-based approach would help ensure that the selected interventions are both efficient and responsive to actual flood scenarios.
The initiative forms part of the city’s broader Drainage Masterplan, which includes the continuous construction of detention basins designed to regulate excess rainwater and reduce flood risks in low-lying communities.
Mayor Belmonte assured residents that the city government is maintaining close coordination with national agencies and experts to address persistent flooding concerns.
“Asahan niyo pong matinding nakikipagtulungan ang ating lokal na pamahalaan sa iba't ibang ahensya upang matugunan ang problema ng pagbaha sa ating lungsod (Expect our local government to work closely with various agencies to address the problem of flooding in our city),” she said.
