Police charge 2 gas station owners for alleged profiteering
The Philippine National Police (PNP) filed criminal charges against owners of two gasoline stations in Nueva Vizcaya and Eastern Samar for alleged profiteering amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Both the PNP and the Department of Energy have warned of legal consequences for hoarding and price manipulation and the message appeared to have not reached the to gas station owners.
PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the filing of cases stemmed from the complaints of motorists and request for investigation over allegation of selling petroleum products at unreasonable price.
Tuaño did not provide specific details on the case but the PNP earlier warned that it will run after those who would dare to take advantage of the oil supply and demand.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said part of the PNP’s role on the problem is to monitor possibility of hoarding and price manipulation.
So far, the latest monitoring of territorial units is that there were around 372 gas stations who were forced to shut down operations due to supply issue.
The PNP had been tapped by the Department of Energy to gather information on gas stations that suddenly closed amid the price hikes and whether retailers were properly observing the implementation of the increases.
Tuaño said the Municipal Pricing Coordinating Council, where the PNP is a member, had been convened to help monitor prices.
