PNP steps up drive vs scammers amid fuel subsidy distribution
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered chiefs of police to intensify the monitoring and ensure police action against scammers who may take advantage of the distribution of fuel subsidy.
Aside from securing payout sites for P5,000 subsidy, Nartatez said he wants ground personnel to be active in monitoring and in responding to any call for assistance.
“We want to ensure that government aid reaches the hands of intended beneficiaries without interference from fraudsters,” said Nartatez.
He then encouraged the public, particularly the beneficiaries, to seek assistance if they think they are being targeted by scam operators, “We encourage all our kababayan to be wary of scam operations.
“On the part of the PNP, we are taking proactive measures to make sure that the fuel subsidy will go to the intended beneficiaries,” he added.
President Marcos earlier announced cash assistance and fuel subsidies for public utility vehicle drivers, farmers, and fisherfolk burdened by the oil price hikes caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO), meanwhile, warned the public against scam activities, noting that some lawless elements could take advantage of the situation and commit fraudulent acts to obtain money.
Nartatez, for his part, stressed that law-abiding citizens should not suffer from the money-making modus of scammers.
By establishing a visible police presence, he stated that the PNP aims to deter lawless elements who use the digital and physical payout space to commit fraudulent acts.
Nartatez also highlighted the cooperation between the police and the community against any form of criminal activities.
