Bicycle riders will now have a safe haven to refresh themselves in Pasig City after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) inaugurated a facility that provides a support system for transition from the road to the workplace.
And MMDA General Manager Don Artes wants to have more Bike-to-Work End-of-Trip (EoT) Facilities in various parts of Metro Manila in a bid to promote active transport and sustainable mobility across the metropolis, especially with the call for energy conservation amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Located at the Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA), Artes said the Bike-to-Work End-of-Trip facility has four shower rooms: one for male users, one for female users, and two all-gender rooms. It also provides essential amenities such as secure bike racks and changing spaces to support cyclists, especially those going to their work.
“This is to ensure that the transition from the road to the workplace is comfortable, inclusive, and accessible for all cyclists,” he added.
“We will continue to roll out initiatives that encourage people, especially workers and office-goers, to consider cycling as an adaptable mode of transportation,” he added.
Artes said they are also exploring the possibility of operating the facilities 24/7 to better serve and accommodate more cyclists. Currently, around 1,700 cyclists use the EDSA bike lane daily.
For monitoring and security, users are required to register upon entry before accessing the facilities for free.
The opening of the new facility was aggressively pushed by MMDA General Manager Nioclas Torre III who has been setting examples in the use of bicycles to and from the workplaces.
“The purpose of this initiative is clear and simple: to protect the welfare of the cyclists,” said Torre.
“This is an effective and concrete step toward a more bike-friendly metropolis. This pilot initiative serves as a proof of concept and reflects MMDA’s long-term vision for sustainable and inclusive transport systems,” he added.
Artes said the MMDA is looking forward for a strong synergy between the agency and private sectors to provide support through subsidies for water and electricity for the facilities.
Meanwhile, LPG distributor Republic Gas Corp. (Regasco) has committed to donating hygiene supplies, including soaps, shampoos, and 1,000 towels for users.
Cycling representative Pio G. Fortuno Jr. also expressed gratitude to the agency for acknowledging the needs of the biking community and advancing cyclist-friendly programs, " I hope a lot of private companies would follow the example of MMDA to set up bike-friendly facilities."
The activity was also attended by representatives from various cycling and mobility advocacy community including MNL Moves, Move As One Coalition, Sakay PH, Make It Safer Movement, Bicycle Friendly Philippines, Tiklop Society of the Philippines, Siklista Pilipino, Firefly Brigade, East Side Riders Marikina, Renacimiento Manila, Happy Pedal Project, and the National Bicycle Organization.
