A trusted congressman of President Marcos--particularly during the 2025 mid-term elections wherein he was tapped as campaign manager--apparently holds Vice President Sara Duterte in very high regard when it comes to accountability.
According to Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco, Vice President Duterte isn't the type that politicians complicit in the flood control projects corruption scandal could make "arrangements" with, particularly if she becomes president.
"Si Sara, one million percent hindi nila mag-areglo. So kung ikaw yung merong kasalanan, gusto ko bang manalo yung one million percent hindi mo mag-areglo? (I'm one million percent sure, they can't make arrangements with Sara. So if you've committed a wrongdoing, would you want this person, whom one million percent you can't make arrangements with, to win?)" Tiangco said in a chance interview.
Tiangco was selling the argument that his House colleagues who have been linked to anomalous flood control projects wanted the Vice President impeached. This, as the impeachment proceedings against Duterte are slowly but surely advancing in the Committee on Justice.
Tiangco served as campaign manager of the Marcos administration-backed Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas during last year's mid-term polls. Meanwhile, the opposition ticket was supported by Marcos critic Duterte.
Last month, Duterte announced her plans of vying for the presidency in the 2028 elections.
Asked if he thought a potential president other than Duterte could bring about accountability, the Navotas solon said: "Honestly, tingin nila maa-areglo nila iba eh. Pero si Sara, sa tingin nila, hindi nila maa-areglo yun (Honestly, they think they can make arrangements with others. But with Sara, they think they can't make arrangements with her)."
"Maging totoo tayo, kayo paano ba kayo nag-iisip? Sa tingin niyo ba, maa-areglo si Sara o hindi? Hindi. (Let's be real, how do you guys think? Do you think you can have your way with Sara? You can't)," he said, again referring to flood control mess-linked politicians.
When told that he could be passing judgment over other supposed "presidentiables", Tiangco rather bluntly said, "Opinyon ko yun eh. Kahit kayo naman, may opinyon kayo eh (That’s my opinion. Even you can form your own opinions).
But he walked back on this a few seconds later, when he was asked whether or not Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo and Senator Erwin Tulfo were less inclined to hold people accountable.
"Alam mo ayoko (You know I don't want to), I don't want to pass judgment on them...Hindi ko hinuhusgahan yung ibang kandidato. Ang sinasabi ko lang, ito, siguradong hindi nila maa-areglo. Alam ko yun, at alam nila yun," the veteran House member explained.
(I am not passing judgment on the other candidates. What I'm simply saying is, this one, Im sure they cannot make arrangements with. I know that, and they know that.)
In the same interview, Tiangco heavily insinuated that he has diverged politically from President Marcos.
