Vice President Sara Duterte reaffirmed in Digos City on Monday, March 16, that the Office of the Vice President is ready to extend assistance to Filipinos affected by the conflict in the Middle East and increase in fuel and commodity prices.
Duterte expressed solidarity with overseas Filipino workers affected by tensions in the Middle East and Filipinos hit by rising fuel and commodity prices.
Duterte said the OVP is prepared to provide help through its programs. "Whatever assistance the Office of the Vice President can provide, we will do. Just let us know how we can help."
The Vice President cited the OVP's Relief for Ingredients and Individuals in Crisis and Emergencies program as part of their immediate response to affected communities.
Duterte criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his shortcomings in addressing national issues.
"He has many shortcomings as President. It is not only about showing sympathy and empathy toward our fellow Filipinos. More than that, there are problems and scandals involving the use of public funds," Duterte said.
Despite challenges posed by the global situation, Duterte said economic recovery remains possible, noting that while the road back to prosperity may be difficult due to rising fuel prices and global instability, it is not impossible for the Philippines to recover.
Duterte was in Digos City for the unveiling of a statue honoring the late Barangay Tres de Mayo Chairman Oscar Bucol who was killed last Nov. 25. She met local officials and residents.
Duterte said the construction of Bucol's statue in the barangay is acceptable as long as a barangay resolution supports it. She added that barangays have authority under the Local Government Code of the Philippines to implement initiatives within their jurisdiction.
