Deputy Speaker Antipolo City 1st district Rep. Ronaldo "Ronnie" Puno praised House Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos on Monday, March 16 for not using his stature to benefit from budget allocations.
Parang nabawasan pa yata yung distrito niya," Puno said in a press conference.
(You know, this is where I admire Majority Leader Sandro. Because even though he’s the President’s son, he didn’t take advantage in these budget discussions. In fact, it seems his district even had its budget reduced.)
As the majority leader, Rep. Marcos is the right-hand man of House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III.
Di ba?" said Puno.
(That’s what I mean by leadership by example, OK? For instance, if you’re the Speaker for 300 congressmen, you should probably put others first so you won’t be accused of exploiting your position as the negotiator for Congress. Right?)
Puno, chairman of the National Unity Party (NUP) gave these glowing remarks for Rep. Marcos even as he crtiicized the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for its supposed lackadaisical efforts.
(So if possible, let majo be the one to face them. After all, he’s our majority leader and he’s proven to us that he doesn’t put himself first here. Then he can help us resolve this DBM issue properly.)
"Pero doon sa iba parang wala na kaming tiwala eh (But with the others, it feels like we’ve already lost trust)," Puno added, without mentioning any name in particular.
Puno said that out of the 41 NUP stalwarts in the House, at least 39 had their budgets in their distircts reduced.
While House members' primary task is to create laws, they are also expected by their constituents to deliver programs and projects that bring immediate, tangible benefits to their respective district.
In the same presser, Puno said the NUP would mull transferring from the majority bloc to the minority bloc during the upcoming six-week Lenten recess.
