Thousands of transport workers in Manila will receive financial assistance as the city government rolls out P17.3 million in fuel subsidies to help drivers cope with the continuing rise in global oil prices.
The assistance, provided through the fuel subsidy program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, will benefit 3,463 transport workers across six districts in the Manila.
City officials said the distribution, scheduled on March 17, aims to ease the burden on public transport drivers whose income has been affected by higher fuel costs.
The subsidy distribution will be held in several venues across the city to ensure easier access for beneficiaries.
At the Patricia Paraiso Sports Complex in Tondo, a total of 352 transport workers from Districts I and II will receive P1,760,000 in assistance.
Meanwhile, 937 drivers from District III will receive P4,685,000 during the payout at the Barangay 377 Covered Court in Sta. Cruz.
Another 1,073 beneficiaries from District V and Baseco will be given P5,365,000 in fuel assistance at the Dakota Covered Court in Barangay 659, Ermita.
The largest group of beneficiaries, 1,101 transport workers from Districts IV and VI, will receive P5,505,000 during the distribution at the ASAC Covered Court in Barangay 627, M. Araullo Street, Sta. Mesa.
In total, 3,463 transport workers will receive assistance amounting to P17,315,000, providing much-needed relief for drivers as fuel costs continue to affect the public transport sector.
City officials said the program forms part of broader efforts of the national government and the city to support vulnerable sectors and sustain public transport operations amid rising oil prices.
