Empowered by faith and finance: Stories of hope from Muslim women in Mindanao

FROM THE MARGINS
As the world marked International Women’s Day on March 8 and Muslim communities celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the festival that concludes the holy month of Ramadan, it was a fitting moment to reflect on the quiet but powerful ways women shape the future of their families and communities.
Across Mindanao, many Muslim mothers carry multiple responsibilities. They nurture their children, support their husbands, manage household finances, and increasingly run small businesses that sustain their families. Yet for many of them, access to financial services that respect their faith and values remains limited.
When ethical and inclusive financial opportunities become available, the impact can be profound. For women striving to improve their lives while remaining faithful to Islamic principles, such opportunities offer more than capital -- they provide dignity, confidence, and hope.
The stories of Faridah Ibrahim, Maimana H. Socor, and Haironiza Batuan reveal how access to faith-sensitive financial support can help families move from uncertainty toward stability.
A mother’s determination
Faridah Ibrahim, a 31-year-old mother of six from Barangay Punlad in Pantar, Lanao del Sur, knows what it means to struggle. Her husband supplies wood to furniture shops in their area, but their income was often unpredictable. When a neighbor introduced her to a Shariah-inspired program offered by a microfinance institution (MFI), Faridah immediately felt drawn to its mission of lifting people from poverty. As she learned more, she was motivated to pursue a long-held dream — to start a small business and help provide for their children’s education.
With her first Musharakah financing of ₱10,000, she launched a modest fruit stall. Since then, she has completed five financing cycles to grow her sarisari store. While she appreciates the immediacy of Qard Hassan interest-free lending, she prefers the shared-partnership structure that Musharakah allows her to allocate funds where they are most needed.
By availing herself of the MFI’s financial services, Faridah’s family was able to purchase better tools and equipment for their wood production business. She also appreciated the program’s savings and insurance products.
“Bukod sa suportang pinansiyal, gusto kong maipagpatuloy ang insurance na magpoprotekta sa aking pamilya,” she shared.
Training sessions on mental health and wellbeing broadened her perspective and helped open communication within the family. Agricultural training introduced her to plant grafting techniques, which she now teaches to neighbors.
For Faridah, empowerment has come not only through financial independence but also through personal growth and community sharing.
A small store, a big step forward
For Maimana H. Socor, managing a small sari-sari store while her husband drives a tricycle was a daily balancing act. Their earnings were barely enough to cover essential expenses.
Learning about the Shariah-inspired financing program through her aunt gave her renewed hope. Upon joining in January 2025, her initial ₱10,000 Musharakah financing allowed her to expand her store’s inventory. As sales improved, she gradually increased her financing to ₱30,000 — giving her business the stability it needed to grow.
Today, the additional income helps support her children’s schooling without the burden of high-interest borrowing. But for Maimana, the most meaningful aspect of the program is its adherence to Islamic principles.
“Komportable kami dahil ito ay hindi haram at naka-ayon sa Islamic Law,” she explained.
Training programs also opened new possibilities. Through livelihood workshops, she learned to make perfume and fabric conditioner -- skills that can create additional income. Sessions on mental health and wellbeing helped strengthen her relationship with her children.
Rebuilding after crisis
Haironiza Batuan’s journey began during a moment of crisis. Her family’s vehicle, their main source of income, broke down. A cousin introduced her to the MFI in early 2025. With her first Musharakah financing of ₱10,000, Haironiza was able to repair the vehicle and restore their transport operations. Soon after, she also opened a sari-sari store to diversify the family’s livelihood.
For Haironiza, the experience provided not only financial relief but also spiritual reassurance. Knowing that the financing structure follows Shariah principles gave her peace of mind that their livelihood remains halal.
Encouraged by the program’s impact, she eventually accepted the responsibility of becoming a center chief, helping guide and encourage other women in her community.
Like Faridah and Maimana, Haironiza also benefited from various training sessions. Mental health and wellbeing seminars strengthened family relationships, while livelihood workshops introduced practical skills such as producing dishwashing liquid and gardening — simple ventures that can generate additional income for their families.
Building futures
Taken together, these stories illustrate an important lesson: when financial services respect people’s beliefs and circumstances, they become more than economic tools. They become pathways to dignity and empowerment.
Faridah, Maimana, and Haironiza may run small businesses, but the changes they are building are far from small. They are feeding families, educating children, and strengthening communities—quiet reminders that empowerment often begins where faith, determination, and opportunity meet.
