Cellboy-backed St. Stephen’s High School drew inspired games from Lawrence Wu and Kish Co and outlasted St. Jude Catholic School-Linea Metal Furnishings, 68-61, to boost its bid for an outright semis berth in the 30-39 years-old division of the Smart Sports Fil-Chinese Athletic Association Inc. presented by Tanduay Athletics held Friday, March 13, at the Tanduay gym in Quiapo, Manila.
Wu scattered 17 points, including five in the payoff period as the Stephenians tied the Xavier School-McDavid x Windsor Golden Stallions for second to third places with similar 5-1 records going into the final week of the elims of the 8-school tournament.
Co, on the other hand, tallied a double-double of 10 points and 17 boards while Joseph Uy and Jason Pascual added 8 points each.
The Stephenians, however, need to hurdle their last game against league-leading Al Cars-backed Hope Christian HS on Monday if they are to advance to the semis automatically.
Bannered by PBA coach Charles Tiu, Gab Banal, Kyles Lao and Jarell Lim, the Golden Stallions are installed heavy favorites against the skidding Chiang Kai Shek College-Fortune Mansion Seafoods Restaurant on Friday, March 20.
The top two finishers after the single round elims will march to the Final Four automatically with the No. 3 team facing No. 6 and the No. 4 going up against No. 5 in the knockout quarterfinal round.
In the other game, Uno High-Golden Peters nailed its first win in five starts after downing the CKSC Blue Dragons, 64-59, thanks to Andrei Tanlo and Adriane Anglim who erupted for 21 and 14 points, respectively.
The win kept Uno’s quarters bid alive while the loss dropped CKSC to fifth with a 2-3 card.
Meantime, Xavier and St. Stephen’s keep their 1-2 positions in the 50-and-above division with similar 4-1 marks in the event also backed by Genius Hardware, Ultraforce Tires, Cellboy, PGFlex Linoleum, Boysen, Lamtex Pipes, Jiang Nan, Hangry Pares, Powerhouse Tools, L.F. Fireworks, BYD Valenzuela, BAIC, Jetour, Oedo, 1118 Autospa, and TCL.
