Sinag Maynila returns with six feature films, record number of student entries
The Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival returns from March 23 to 29, once again shining the spotlight on Filipino storytelling while celebrating a new generation of filmmakers eager to shape the industry’s future.
This year’s festival will feature six full-length films that reflect the depth and diversity of Philippine cinema, with screenings scheduled in selected Metro Manila cinemas, including Gateway Cineplex, Eastwood Cinemas, Uptown Cinemas, Venice Cineplex, and Lucky Chinatown Cinemas.
Festival organizers are particularly elated by the overwhelming response from young filmmakers.
“Actually, this year, so far sa lahat ng mga edition, ito yung may pinakamaraming estudyanteng short films na sumali. A total of 333 short films. So hindi biro yun. (So far, among all the editions, this year has the highest number of student short films that joined. A total of 333 short films. That’s no small feat)," festival director Brillante Mendoza stated.
Direk Brillante sees the surge in student participation as a promising sign for Philippine cinema.
“Despite sa mga nangyayari sa ating industry ngayon, kapag nakakakita tayo ng ganyang karaming mga short filmmakers at mga estudyante na nagkaka-interest na gumawa ng pelikula, kahit papaano nagkakaroon tayo ng pag-asa na huwag sanang mawala, sapagkat sila ang mga future directors at filmmakers natin eh. (Despite what is happening in our industry right now, when we see that many short filmmakers and students become interested in making films, somehow it gives us hope, because they are our future directors and filmmakers)," he said.
Meanwhile, festival founder and president Wilson Y. Tieng emphasized that Sinag Maynila continues to serve as a platform for filmmakers who push creative boundaries and tell meaningful Filipino stories.
“Sinag Maynila continues to be a beacon for Filipino filmmakers who dare to tell stories that challenge, inspire, and reflect our realities,” Tieng said. “This year's entries embody resilience, creativity, and the evolving voice of Philippine cinema.”
The festival’s 2026 feature film lineup showcases a wide range of themes: from social realities to psychological drama and romance.
Among the entries is “Pinikas | Halved” by Cris Fuego, a slice-of-life drama about a teenage breadwinner in a fishing village torn between love and her father’s dreams for her future abroad.
Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio’s “Desperada” tells the story of a traumatized young woman rescued from the streets who finds healing and unexpected love in a shelter for the mentally ill.
Veteran filmmaker Joel Lamangan offers the crime drama “All About Her,” which unravels the mysterious death of a beauty queen and exposes ambition, manipulation, and psychological warfare.
In “Sweet Escape,” directed by Rommel C. Ricafort, a medical professional haunted by a malpractice tragedy finds redemption through a surrogacy journey in Bohol and an unexpected romance with a Korean entrepreneur.
Vincent M. Tañada presents the psychological period film “Ang Bangkay | The Embalmer,” about a widowed embalmer whose encounters with grieving families and corpses reveal hidden greed, abuse, and darkness.
Completing the lineup is “Lanaya” by Clyde Capistrano, a suspense drama about a detective who recruits a nursing student to spy on an elderly woman suspected of murder, exploring grief, power, and moral ambiguity.
Brillante said the festival continues to embrace both independent and mainstream sensibilities to make the films more accessible to audiences.
“Every year, iba't-ibang pelikula, iba-ibang storytellers. Siyempre, every year gusto natin talagang mapanood ang mga napili nating mga magagandang pelikula. (Every year, there are different films and different storytellers. Of course, every year we really want audiences to watch the good films that we have selected)," he said.
“For this year, syempre, like every year, gusto rin naming i-involve ang mga original films. And then, of course, makikita natin may halong mga mainstream atsaka ang iba independent talaga. Yan ang gusto nating mangyari sa Sinag Maynila. Hindi siya totally pang-independent lang, i-me-merge natin yung dalawa para mas maging accessible siya sa mga manonood. (Of course, like every year, we also want to involve original films. And then, of course, we can see a mix of mainstream films and truly independent ones. That’s what we want to happen in Sinag Maynila. It’s not meant to be purely independent. We want to merge the two, so it becomes more accessible to audiences.)"
The Awards Night, or "Gabi ng Parangal," honoring the best of Sinag Maynila 2026 across different categories, will be held on March 28 at Gateway Cineplex. For schedules and ticket information, please visit Sinag Maynila’s official Facebook and YouTube accounts.
