The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) seized P35 million worth of suspected crystal meth or “shabu” in two separate anti-illegal drug operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and in Zamboanga City on Saturday, March 14.
At NAIA Terminal 3, authorities intercepted around P28.2 million worth of suspected shabu from a Croatian passenger identified only as alias “Neri,” 48.
The suspect arrived from Johannesburg, South Africa and was arrested around 11:30 a.m. at the Customs Exclusion Room during an interdiction operation by the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.
The task group is composed of the PDEA, the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP), and the Airport Police Department.
During an inspection of the passenger’s baggage, operatives found more than four kilograms of suspected illegal drugs hidden inside a beige luggage labeled “POWER UP.”
Recovered from the luggage were approximately 4,156 grams of suspected shabu packed inside three improvised pouches wrapped in black duct tape, along with personal belongings including two pairs of leather shoes and assorted clothes, the PDEA said.
Authorities also confiscated the suspect’s passport, boarding passes, mobile phones, identification cards, assorted bank cards, foreign currencies, and other personal belongings.
The seized substance was turned over to the PDEA Laboratory Service for forensic examination.
The suspect faces charges for violation of Section 4 or the importation of dangerous drugs under Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Another anti-drug operation led to the seizure of suspected shabu valued at about P6.8 million as agents from PDEA Regional Office 9 arrested a suspect identified as alias “Brandon” during a buy-bust operation along Corquera Street in Barangay Zone IV in Zamboanga City.
Authorities confiscated one resealable plastic bag containing about one kilogram of suspected shabu, as well as the marked buy-bust money, one Android mobile phone, and a Hyundai sedan that was allegedly used by the suspect.
The suspect will face charges for violation of Section 5 or the sale of illegal drugs under RA 9165.
In a statement, the PDEA said the offense carries the penalty of life imprisonment and a fine ranging from P500,000 to P10 million.
