'No Room For Love' selected for Cinequest, special screening on March 15
A Filipino-American-made movie has been selected for the prestigious Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival, with a special screening set this Sunday, March 15, at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Mountain View in California.
The movie No Room For Love tackles the dynamics and dread of seven people of considerable talent and lofty dreams who share a small apartment in Los Angeles, California.
The film is co-directed by Randal and Malou Kamradt and stars a mix of indie veterans and emerging acting talents.
The cast, which observers describe as a pool that brings authenticity and heart to this multigenerational family story, includes Bong Cabrera (Magellan — Cannes Film Festival Selection; Leonor Will Never Die —Sundance Special Jury Prize), Rey “Jaya” Aclao (Asog — Tribeca), Cynthia San Luis (The Newsroom — HBO), Georgina Tolentino (No Dogs), Rommel Rojas (Naughty Maids), Iya Baclagan (A Karaoke Space Odyssey), Mitch Narito (The Good Place — NBC), and the beloved Fil-Am Prince of Pop Garth Garcia.
The directors pointed out, “This collective, bound together by our wild post-COVID L.A experiences, has fictionalized our own stories and packaged it up in a tidy little French New Wave-inspired film for all to enjoy. “
The movie apparently runs over the course of a year. In the context of the story and California’s four seasons, that means the plot will move “from spring’s isolation to summer’s betrayals, to a disastrous fall party and winter eviction,”
The movie’s family members, due to space constraints, the fiery competitiveness of their coexistence, and the city they live in, are forced to “chase distant showbiz dreams while confronting poverty, bad luck and, yes, each other.”
Having said that, the film still opts for comedy as its genre. That is why it is labeled “a comedy celebrating big dreams, small spaces, and the resilience of artists who refuse to give up. Good vibes!
“A world of vibrant artists and creatives are contained in this movie, all members of the Filipino American community in Los Angeles whom we are a part of, and in this project, documenters and observers of,” the screenwriting directors added.
The film’s musical landscape is crafted by Dale Edward Chung, Anji Tan, and Jaeya “Jaeonic” Bayani, while editing and cinematography were handled by Daniel Tong and Freddy Duarte, respectively.
Cinequest is considered one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, known for championing innovative storytelling and emerging voices in cinema.
Founded in 1990, the Vinequest presents films from around the world and serves as a platform for filmmakers to connect with audiences, industry professionals, and the broader creative community. It is held annually in March at the heart of Silicon Valley.
