Mayor Nancy hails P5,000 fuel subsidy for Makati tricycle drivers
Makati City Mayor Nancy Binay on Friday, March 13, lauded the national government for the P5,000 fuel subsidy it has allocated for tricycle drivers, providing them with much-needed reprieve from the steep surge in fuel prices caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
“We thank President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. for immediately responding to the needs of our public transport drivers. Malaking tulong ito para sa ating tricycle drivers na araw-araw na nagsusumikap upang maitaguyod ang kanilang pamilya (This is a huge help to our tricycle drivers who work tirelessly every day to support their families)," Binay said.
She noted that the directive to distribute the subsidy was discussed during a meeting between Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and Metro Manila mayors to ensure the fast and orderly rollout of the assistance for public utility drivers, prioritizing tricycle drivers under local government jurisdiction.
Other transport sectors like jeepney drivers and operators will follow.
"Under the program, each qualified tricycle driver will receive P5,000 in financial assistance. Distribution in Metro Manila is expected to begin next week and will be led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr), in coordination with local government units (LGUs)," Binay explained, assuring tricycle drivers that the city government will work closely with national agencies to help facilitate the distribution of the subsidy to eligible beneficiaries.
The city government had recently conducted barangay-based registration and renewal services of tricycle franchises to make the process faster and more convenient for drivers.
According to the latest tally of the city government, Makati City has more than 2,500 registered tricycle drivers.
