BACOLOD CITY – The Land Transportation Office- Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) is investigating a viral video showing a modern jeepney that allegedly failed to give way to an approaching ambulance here.
The agency has issued a show-cause order to the jeepney operator. A separate order will be served to the driver after authorities confirmed his identity.
According to the LTO-NIR, the circulating video raised public concern after the jeepney was seen allegedly blocking the path of the ambulance which may have delayed emergency response and put public safety at risk.
In the video, the uploader can be heard claiming that the patient inside the ambulance fell from the stretcher due to the commotion and became distressed.
The incident drew reactions from netizens, many of who expressed concern and criticized the driver’s behavior.
Police Major Elmer Bonilla, head of the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), said the incident was not formally reported to the police and both parties have reached a settlement.
Earlier this year, the LTO-NIR investigated a call center agent who went viral on social media for repeatedly blocking the right-of-way of a responding firetruck while driving his motorcycle.
The LTO-NIR reminded motorists to always give priority to emergency vehicles, stressing that proper road courtesy is vital to ensure timely medical response and protect public safety.
Meanwhile, a 76-year-old woman died and another elderly woman was injured after a truck hit them and crashed into a telecommunications post on Alijis-Murcia Road in Barangay Singcang-Airport here on Wednesday, March 11.
Bonilla identified the fatality as Teresita, a resident of Barangay Sum-ag here. The injured, Gretel, 67, from Barangay Taculing here, is recuperating in a hospital.
The two elderly women were standing on the roadside when the truck, which was attempting to make a right turn, overshot towards the roadside and hit them before ramming a telecommunications post.
The 66-year-old truck driver was taken to a hospital and later on to the police station. Authorities said the driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Bonilla said the family of Teresita intends to file charges against the driver, who was released from police custody on Thursday, March 12, after the lapse of the reglementary detention period.
