Korean show host assaults woman during live internet show
A Korean emcee is embroiled in a controversy for assaulting a woman during a live internet broadcast of a show called “Excel Broadcasting: on Panda TV.
The incident involved MC Dingdong (real name Heo Yong-un), 46, and a female broadcaster in her 20s., during a show on March 7.
During the show, the woman mentioned MC Dingdong’s past drunk driving incident.
This angered the emcee who grabbed and shook the woman by the hair. The other people on the show were shocked by the incident.
MC Dingdong moved off-camera and returned, saying, "I can accept everything, but when I heard about the incident two years ago, I involuntarily became angry. [That incident] is a traumatic experience for me in its own way. After a year and a half of no work, I was finally trying to show my hard work, but the sudden mention of such a story made me very emotional."
The victim stated after the broadcast that she decided to sue MC Dingdong for assault.
"The swearing I did was something the MC (in advance) okayed. I am currently receiving psychiatric counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic disorder, and the injury diagnosis came out that I will need to recover for two weeks,” she posted on an online forum.
She said she hired a lawyer and filed a lawsuit on March 9. She said she was offered a settlement of 10 million won (about $6,760) but she declined it.
“The lawyer is recommending a settlement, as it's a simple assault, but I'm currently refusing. Many viewers agree that a settlement would be beneficial, and the entertainment company seems to want that, so I'm considering it. The MC continues to send apology texts, but I've asked him to contact me through his lawyer. The lawsuit has already been filed, and I'll consider whether to settle or not depending on the verdict,” she said.
The internet platform suspended MC Dingdong from appearing on the show.
"The MC's impulsive behavior at the time resulted in a serious situation where the BJ suffered physical harm. The management team takes the seriousness of this matter very seriously and has immediately removed the MC from the program and completed the suspension of the broadcasting station," the platform stated, Korean media reported.
MC Dingdong was indicted on charges of refusing to comply with a police DUI checkpoint request in Seoul on Feb. 17, 2021, and fleeing the scene.
MC Dingdong was accused of crashing into a police car and injuring an officer attempting to conduct a breathalyzer test during the escape.
