Gilas Pilipinas found Olympic silver medalist France too hot to handle, 115-66, in its first foray into the world stage in the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament at the Astroballe in Lyon early Thursday, March 12.
As expected, Les Bleus were just too big and too strong for Gilas as they led by as many as 51 in the contest between the world No. 3 and No. 39 teams in the world.
France immediately stamped its class and raced to a commanding 24-9 start and never looked back since then to give the Filipinas a rude welcome in its very first world qualifying tournament.
Gilas, though, showed flashes of brilliance in the match, proving that they have the potential to compete against the world powerhouses.
Sumayah Sugapong paced the Nationals with 13 points while veteran Afril Bernardino chipped in 12 points and six rebounds. Kacey Dela Rosa added 11.
Dominique Malonga was the biggest thorn to the side of Gilas, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds as France had a conscious effort on feeding her the ball inside the paint.
Alexi Chery added 16 while Migna Toure had 14 for the hosts.
Up next for Gilas is world No. 12 Germany on Friday, March 13, before taking on Nigeria, South Korea and Colombia in the coming days.
Only two teams in the Lyon qualifiers will advance to the World Cup with Germany and Nigeria already assured of a spot. Germany earned a spot by virtue of being the host while Nigeria claimed a seat as the African champion.
