Angge Poyos regained her touch, Reg Jurado and Jonna Perdido steadied the ship, and University of Santo Tomas turned back University of the Philippines, 16-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20, for a bounce back win in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, March 11.
Drawing strength from their previous setback over the Adamson Falcons last weekend, the Golden Tigresses took time to regroup after stumbling early before bouncing back in the next three frames. They seized control in the fourth set, erasing a 7-10 deficit and turning it into a 19-15 lead sparked by Perdido, that carried them past the Fighting Maroon’s final push.
The win hike UST’s slate to 3-3 and created a three-way logjam with Adamson and UP at No. 4.
Poyos made her presence felt with 24 points on 20 attacks, three blocks, and one ace along with seven excellent digs and six excellent receptions, while Jurado chipped in 16 points.
The Balilihan, Bohol native, who won the Rookie of the Year plum in Season 86, had a quiet five-point outing in their last contest against Adamson.
Perdido, for her part, unloaded 12 points with Julia Balingit contributing four points, including crucial hits in the fourth.
Cassie Carballo also took charge with 18 excellent sets and three digs, while skipper Detdet Pepito posted nine digs, 15 receptions, and one excellent set.
Nina Ytang carried the cudgels for UP after logging 14 points, while Jelai Gajero and Fina Ali added 12 and six points, respectively, in a losing cause.
The Fighting Maroons were evidently struggling offensively as top gunner Cassiey Dongallo continues to nurse a left knee injury which she sustained in their game against Far Eastern University last Sunday.
