Creamline and Akari brace for a looming fiery clash as two of the league’s hottest teams collide in a crucial battle for position in the race for the four Qualifying Round slots in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the FilOil Playtime Centre on Thursday, March 12.
The Cool Smashers enter the 4 p.m. showdown riding a five-game winning streak, bouncing back strongly from their three-set defeat to the PLDT High Speed Hitters last Feb. 5. Since then, the 10-time champions have rediscovered their dominant form and have gone unbeaten for more than a month.
Creamline, however, had to survive a tough test in its last outing, escaping with a five-set victory over Nxled last weekend. The win hiked the Cool Smashers’ record to 5-1, good for third place behind league leaders PLDT (6-1) and Cignal (5-2).
But standing in their way are the Chargers, who are also gaining momentum after snapping a three-game skid with three straight victories, including a four-set triumph over the Capital1 Solar Spikers last Saturday.
At 3-3, Akari sits at No. 7 but remains within striking distance of the coveted Top 4, making Thursday’s showdown a pivotal opportunity to climb the standings.
A victory over Creamline could propel the Chargers into the No. 4 spot, keeping their qualifying round hopes alive with matches against the Galeries Tower Highrisers and the Farm Fresh Foxies still ahead in their preliminary round.
“Again, total team effort. Not because nag-start kami ng bad, all throughout na ‘yun. Nag-set kami ng standards na hindi kami dapat aabot na papahirapan ‘yung sarili namin at the end. Dapat, pare-pareho kami ng goal. Kung ma-achieve namin yun, pahirapan kami pataas,” said Akari head coach Tina Salak.
Despite Creamline’s strong run, head coach Sherwin Meneses acknowledged there are still areas in the team’s play that need sharpening as they brace for a determined Akari side eager to prove it belongs among the contenders.
Meanwhile, in the 6:30 p.m. match, the Chameleons hope to finally snap a troubling four-game losing streak when they take on the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles, who are also trying to end a similar skid.
Nxled nearly snapped its slide against Creamline, pushing the league powerhouse to a grueling five-set duel last Saturday.
But the Chameleons faltered in the closing stretch, where experience and composure proved decisive, allowing the Cool Smashers to escape and extend Nxled’s losing skid to four games.
Still, coach Ettore Guidetti is expected to maximize his team’s depth as Nxled seeks to regain the form that fueled its three straight victories to open the conference.
Leading the charge are Brooke Van Sickle, MJ Phillips and Myla Pablo, with support from EJ Laure, Chiara Permentilla, Lyann de Guzman, Jonah Escamillan and Ranya Musa.
The Thunderbelles, meanwhile, may lack big-name stars but boast a roster of hungry and determined players eager to turn their fortunes around.
Veterans and young guns alike – Jovelyn Gonzaga, Thea Gagate, Chinnie Arroyo, Fiola Ceballos, Chai Troncoso, Renee Peñafiel and Cess Robles – will lean on playmaker Cloanne Mondonedo as they attempt to climb out of the cellar with a struggling 1-6 record.
While no team will be eliminated after the first round, the battle for postseason positioning is expected to intensify as the tournament moves into the highly competitive Play-In phase.
T
eams ranked No. 5 to 10 will be split into two groups and will figure in knockout matches, with only the two survivors advancing to the semifinals.
The Top 4, meanwhile, will square off in a pair of knockout duels for the first two Final Four berths.
The losing teams will get another chance, facing the two Play-In winners for the remaining semifinal slots in what promises to be a pressure-packed race to the next stage.
