Leyte town approves ordinance hiring senior citizens for work
MATAG-OB, Leyte – To promote the continued employment of capable senior citizens and ensure equal job opportunities, the Sangguniang Bayan of Matag-ob has approved the Senior Citizens Employment and Participation Ordinance of Matag-ob, Leyte.
Municipal Ordinance No. 227, Series of 2025, mandates the creation of employment opportunities for qualified senior citizens and encourages private companies, establishments, and cooperatives to hire at least one part-time, contractual, or regular senior citizen employee.
Mayor Bernandino Tacoy stressed the importance of inclusivity in community-building.
“We are not just promoting the health and well-being of our senior citizens but we also want to ensure they remain an indispensable and active force in our collective progress in Matag-ob,” he said.
The ordinance provides for the hiring of senior citizens in municipal offices and barangay-based programs in compliance with Civil Service Commission (CSC) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) regulations.
Qualified senior citizens may be assigned to roles such as clerical and administrative support, barangay help desk services, mentoring, community mobilization, and cultural promotion.
The ordinance urged all institutions, cooperatives, and business enterprises within the municipality to hire senior citizens.
Aside from being recognized through the annual Matag-ob Senior-Friendly Employer Awards, incentives will also be granted to private establishments that hire senior citizens, including priority access to local government unit (LGU) programs such as livelihood assistance, trade fairs, and business promotional events.
