Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday, March 11 urged the government to consider accelerating the country’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) to cushion the impact of higher oil prices in light of the growing tension in the Middle East.
Gatchalian made the call as the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the cost of diesel will soar by up to P24.25 per liter this week.
“The ongoing hostilities in the Middle East should serve as a wake-up call. We desperately need to reduce the country’s vulnerability to oil price volatility,” the senator said.
“Paulit-ulit na lang na pinapasan ng mga Pilipino ang bigat ng pagtaas ng presyo ng langis (Filipinos have repeatedly borne the brunt of rising oil prices),” he also said.
The senator noted that the Philippines imports about 96 percent to 99 percent of its fuel requirements.
“Accelerating our transition to the adoption of EVs would help insulate the local economy from fuel shocks,” he pointed out.
The lawmaker also emphasized the need to accelerate the establishment of the necessary infrastructure support for EVs, such as charging stations.
This would encourage more organizations, as well as private entities and individuals to shift to EVs.
The government has a conservative target to have 7,300 vehicle charging stations by 2028 under the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI).
CREVI was adopted following the enactment of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) to support nationwide EV adoption.
It was Gatchalian who authored the EVIDA law or Republic Act No. 11697 in a bid to promote the adoption of EVs and develop a local EV industry. The law provides incentives like excise tax exemptions, exemption from number coding, and mandated charging station installation to reduce dependence on imported fuel.
