The Marikina City government will implement a four-day workweek for city offices as part of its efforts to conserve energy and reduce fuel consumption amid rising global oil prices caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Mayor Maan Teodoro signed Executive Order No. 05, Series of 2026, on Monday, March 9, adopting the measure following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The local government said that the EO takes effect immediately and will remain in force until it is revoked or modified, or until the national government lifts the directive on energy conservation.

Under the EO, the city government offices will operate from Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., allowing employees to complete the required 40-hour workweek while reducing electricity use by closing offices every Friday.

Teodoro said the new schedule aims to support the national government’s energy conservation efforts.

“Through the four-day workweek, we are contributing to the national effort to conserve energy,” the mayor said.

However, the EO also stated, "Notwithstanding the adoption of the four-day work week, offices or personnel may be required to render work beyond the prescribed four-day schedule whenever public interest, emergency situations, disaster response, or exigency of service so requires."

Meanwhile, the local government ensured that essential services and field operations will remain 100 percent operational.

These include the operations of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRM), street maintenance teams, public safety units, and other field personnel to ensure continuous emergency response and the delivery of key public services.

“This is to ensure continuous emergency response, infrastructure maintenance, and uninterrupted delivery of key public services for Marikina residents,” the mayor said.
