Female cop injured as protesters attempt to breach security line near US Embassy
A female police officer was injured after a group of protesters attempted to breach a security line during a rally marking International Women’s Day near the U.S. Embassy in Manila on Sunday, March 8.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), the officer sustained a minor ankle injury while holding the police line along Kalaw Avenue when a segment of the rallyists tried to push past authorities to reach the embassy.
The march, composed of various progressive groups, started at Liwasang Bonifacio and proceeded toward Kalaw Road, but protesters were prevented from reaching the embassy after police established a security perimeter in the area.
Tension briefly escalated when several protesters attempted to break through the line, prompting a scuffle with officers deployed to secure the route.
Despite the incident, MPD spokesperson Police Major Philipp Ines said personnel maintained maximum tolerance throughout the rally.
"Hindi niyo kami kaaway (We are not your enemy)," Ines said, emphasizing that police were deployed to ensure both public safety and the protesters’ right to peaceful assembly.
The MPD said officers on the ground were equipped with full protective gear and maintained coordination with commanders to ensure discipline and situational awareness during the deployment.
