Shevana Laput sings praises for La Salle teammates after two-game absence

Shevana Laput showered her teammates with praises for rising to the occasion and seizing the opportunity during her two-game absence to keep De La Salle University unblemished in the UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball tournament.
Sidelined for two matches due to sickness, the 21-year-old Laput made her presence felt and steered the Lady Spikers to a 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 win over the hapless University of the East Lady Warriors at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, March 7.
It marked their fifth consecutive win to remain on top of the standings, which Laput, who logged nine points off eight attacks and one block along with four excellent digs, was grateful for as her teammates answered the call by filling the void of her missing their last two games.
“And of course, I’m very proud of the whole team. I mean, honestly, I don’t think they were looking for me or anything. I’m just so happy that they rose to the occasion, rose to the opportunity that they got given,” said Laput.
“Because that adds to the confidence that they have and yes I’m back, but at the same time that confidence they have won’t ever leave now,” she added. “I’m so proud of them all.”
Without Laput, La Salle, with Angel Canino at the forefront, also banked on its other gunners in Amie Provido, Shane Reterta, Lilay Del Castillo, and rookie Mikee Santos, who shone with 10 points in La Salle’s three-set victory over University of the Philippines late February.
Provido stepped up against archrival Ateneo, while getting ample support from Canino, Del Castillo, Reterta, and Ella De Guzman on the offensive end.
The 6-foot-2 outside hitter, who topscored in their first two contests against Far Eastern University and host University of Santo Tomas, also commended her fellow senior in Canino for providing great leadership for the Taft-based squad, which is seeking for a title redemption bid this year.
“I’m so damn proud of you, Angel. You’re the captain for a reason, we’re doing this together,” Laput stressed.
La Salle, which has a few days of break, gets closer to its first-round sweep with two assignments left in Adamson and reigning champion National University which it faces this Wednesday, March 11 and next Sunday, March 15, respectively.
“I don’t believe that our team is peaking, I believe that we’re on the right track though,” Laput continued. “We are doing the right thing in practice, yes, there are obstacles, challenges coming our way, but that’s where we have to bounce back.”
