The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Sunday, March 8, that a low pressure area (LPA) is currently being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), though it has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression.
In its weather advisory, PAGASA reported that as of 2 a.m., the LPA was located about 1,690 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.
PAGASA noted that the weather disturbance has a small chance of entering PAR within the next 24 hours.
‘Amihan,’ easterlies affecting weather nationwide
Despite the LPA remaining outside PAR, PAGASA said the northeast monsoon or “amihan” and the easterlies will continue to influence the country’s weather, bringing light to moderate rains in several areas.
In its 4 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said cloudy skies with rain will prevail over Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, and Aurora due to the northeast monsoon. Residents in these areas were warned of possible flash floods or landslides, especially during periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, cloudy skies with light rains are expected over Quezon Province, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, also due to the effects of the “amihan.”
Metro Manila and nearby areas expected to see isolated light rains
PAGASA said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will be experienced in Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, Occidental Mindoro, the rest of Central Luzon, and the remaining areas of CALABARZON due to the northeast monsoon.
On the other hand, the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands. PAGASA warned that heavy downpours in these areas may trigger flash floods or landslides.
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, also caused by the easterlies. PAGASA added that severe thunderstorms may still lead to localized flooding or landslides.
Wind and coastal conditions
Moderate to strong northeast winds will prevail over Northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon, resulting in moderate to rough seas, according to PAGASA.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country will experience light to moderate northeast to north winds with slight to moderate coastal waters.
