GAC International Philippines used its 2026 dealer conference to give dealers an early look at the GS8 Hybrid Electric Vehicle, one of the key models set to join its local lineup in the coming months.
The GS8 HEV was part of the product presentation shown during the February 27 gathering in Manila, which brought together dealer principals and representatives from Metro Manila, North Luzon, South Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. The conference also marked an important step for the brand locally, coming after the establishment of GAC International Philippines as a directly operated subsidiary of GAC headquarters.
Alongside updates on dealer operations and the company’s direction in the Philippines, GAC also outlined the vehicles expected to support its next phase of growth. Among them was the GS8 HEV, a large three-row SUV that will sit near the top of the brand’s electrified range.
GAC said the GS8 HEV is expected to start accepting orders in the Philippines in March 2026, while pricing and full local specifications will be announced closer to launch.
Hybrid system and performance
The GS8 HEV combines the size and road presence of GAC’s flagship SUV with the brand’s Mega Wave THS hybrid system.
For the Philippine market, GAC has yet to release a full specification sheet. Based on overseas specifications, however, the GS8 Hybrid uses a powertrain rated at 237-PS, working through an e-CVT. It also uses a 1.6-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery rated at 6.5-Ah and 244.8V, while the electric motor itself produces 54-PS.
In international specification, the GS8 Hybrid is quoted with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 190-km/h. Those figures suggest that while the focus is on efficiency, performance has not been left out of the package.
Large SUV with seven seats
The GS8 is positioned as one of the largest SUVs in GAC Motor’s range and is built as a full-size family vehicle with three rows of seating.
In global markets, the current-generation model stretches to nearly five meters long and uses a long wheelbase to accommodate seven passengers. That puts it in the same space as other midsize to large three-row SUVs, with an emphasis on cabin room and long-distance comfort.
The GS8 HEV shown to dealers also introduces several subtle exterior revisions compared with the gasoline-powered GS8 currently sold in the Philippines. The most noticeable change is at the front, where the hybrid adopts a more complex grille pattern made up of dense vertical elements that extend deeper into the bumper, giving the nose a more layered look. The vertically stacked LED headlamp signature remains, but the surrounding trim appears slightly reshaped, and the lower bumper sections are cleaner with fewer contrasting surfaces. In profile, the overall silhouette stays the same, retaining the GS8’s upright stance and long roofline that define its three-row SUV proportions. The hybrid model also appears with a different alloy wheel design, with thinner spokes and a more intricate pattern compared with the wheels used on the current 2.0T variant. The rear design looks largely unchanged, suggesting that most of the visual updates are concentrated at the front.
Overseas versions of the GS8 have been offered with features such as a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment display, and a range of driver assistance systems. Higher-spec models in other markets have also come with leather upholstery, ventilated seats, and multi-zone climate control.
Whether all of those features make it into the Philippine version remains to be seen, but the dealer conference preview makes it clear that the GS8 HEV is being lined up as a premium hybrid offering for the local market.
Part of a wider electrified push
The GS8 HEV is one of several electrified models being lined up by GAC Philippines as it expands beyond conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.
During the dealer conference, the company also highlighted other models across its GAC, Aion, and Hyptec brands, pointing to a broader mix of hybrid and battery-electric vehicles for the Philippine market.
That makes the GS8 HEV an important model for the brand. It gives GAC a foothold in the growing hybrid SUV space while offering buyers the size, seating capacity, and long-range usability that continue to matter in this part of the market.
With orders expected to open in March, more details on pricing, variants, and final Philippine-market specifications should come closer to the model’s official introduction.
