Street dweller attacks social welfare employee during rescue op in Manila

An employee of the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) was hurt after a street dweller they were helping attacked him with a metal pipe during a rescue operation along P. Faura Street in Malate, Manila, on Saturday, March 7.
According to MDSW Director Jay Dela Fuente, the victim and his team were conducting anti-street dwelling rescue operations in the area when the suspect, who was later found out to be a former convict who was just released from jail three days ago, suddenly hit him with a metal pipe on the head.
The victim was immediately given first-aid by rescuers while the suspect was apprehended by the authorities.
Dela Fuente also provided financial assistance to the victim as he continues recuperating from his injury.
"Nais ding ipabatid ng MDSW sa publiko na ang mga kawani nito ay tapat na nagsasagawa lamang ng kanilang tungkulin ang magbigay ng tulong, magsagawa ng rescue operations, at mapanatili ang kaayusan at kalinisan sa iba’t ibang lugar sa Lungsod ng Maynila (The MDSW wishes to inform the public that its staff are only honestly performing their duties to provide assistance, conduct rescue operations, and maintain order and cleanliness in various areas in the City of Manila)," the official said.
"Umaasa ang MDSW sa patuloy na pang-unawa, pakikiisa, at respeto ng publiko sa mga kawani na nagsisikap maghatid ng serbisyong may malasakit para sa kapakanan ng lahat ng Manileño (The MDSW hopes for the public's continued understanding, solidarity, and respect for the staff who strive to deliver caring services for the welfare of all Manileños)," he added.
