SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan – A 71-year-old woman was killed in a fire that destroyed a chapel in Purok 6, Barangay Sapinit, this city, on Friday, March 6.
Police identified the victim as Mila.
Investigation said Mila was sleeping inside a room in the chapel where she was staying when the fire broke out at around 2:30 p.m. A 52-year-old woman allegedly set the chapel on fire.
Flames quickly spread throughout the structure. An individual attempted to rescue the victim but the fire was too big. The fire was placed under control at 3:50 p.m.
Firemen recovered the victim’s charred body during mopping-up operations.
The blaze destroyed two vehicles. Authorities are still determining damage to property.
A concerned citizen apprehended the suspect and turned her over to responding police officers. She was brought to the City Health Office for medical examination.
The suspect was taken to the San Carlos City Police Station for proper disposition. The suspect is allegedly suffering from mental illness. Follow-up investigation is ongoing.
